Kindness + Gratitude

For the month of July, I've made it a goal to really get to know my friends more. Sitting down with people and just talking about each other, aspirations, hobbies, the world, anything at all has always been so enjoyable for me.

These days it can be difficult to really get to know others. Everyone is so busy. For some of us it's really not an option. And I get that. There's bills to pay, mouths to feed, careers to build, and things we just need to do, creating little time for us to be able to sit down and enjoy the company of another human being. No, not just sit down with them and the rest of the time, both are scrolling through media feeds, never truly interacting with one another.

I think that often times people just forget how to interact with others when life wisps them away. And that's okay, it's understandable. For the past 4 years I've been away, attending school, and building towards my chosen career path. And for the past 4 years, the number of individuals that I've considered 'close friends' have dwindled to only a handful, which is perfectly alright. Because I get it. We all have aspirations & goals we want to reach and most often that can mean good friends can drift apart.

My handful of good friends have always been so kind & understanding of my goals & dreams. I pray for their happiness constantly when I don't get to see them and enjoy their company to the fullest when we meet again (if you're one of these individuals- hi. I think you're great. Okay, bye.).

Being grateful of the time that others give us is so important. We only have so much to give.

Picking up the phone to say hello to an old friend you haven't spoken to in a while, inviting others to get-togethers, having brunch with an acquaintance you'd like to get to know more....The first step in getting to know others is to reach out to them. And this part can be really difficult for some people.

Of course, you're definitely not at all obligated to meet with anyone you don't want to meet with but appreciating another person's initial request should still be a thing. I've seen so many cases of old friends reaching out & and being 'left on read' and every time I try to put myself in each person's shoes, it makes me feel terrible. So if you're on the other end of the line, kindly decline- at least acknowledge, y'know? That's all it takes. (And for those who can't accept your response, well then that's when you walk away (quickly), fam.)

Showing up on time, putting your phone down, and really engaging in conversation are such obvious ways to appreciate whoever you're interacting with but we tend to forget. I think the most important thing to remember when we actually do get the chance to interact with others is to be understanding & appreciative of that person.

I feel as though I've been rambling. BUT, no matter.

As a reminder to myself & everyone else. Let's just be kind to one another. Let's appreciate each other. Loved ones & strangers, close friends & acquaintances, all the animals & the environment.

Let's appreciate each person, acknowledge their journey, and encourage each other to keep growing.
